Immune Ageing: Why Resilience Starts at the Cellular Level
Most of us notice resilience when we lose it: the cold that lingers a little longer, the week that takes more out of us than it used to, the recovery that no longer feels automatic. Researchers often describe this shift as immune ageing, and it has become one of the more interesting areas of longevity science.
What is immune ageing?
Our immune system doesn't stay the same across a lifetime. As we age, immune function changes gradually, and low-grade inflammation tends to become more common. None of this is a diagnosis. It is a normal part of ageing, and it's why more people are asking how to support the body over the long term rather than only when they feel unwell.
Where NAD+ comes in
NAD+ is a molecule found in every cell. It is central to how cells produce energy and repair themselves which declines as we age. Researchers have proposed that NAD+ also plays a role in how immune cells function and how inflammation is regulated. One hypothesis paper suggests that NAD+ may help prevent the over-activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a precursor the body can use to make NAD+. The most useful human evidence so far comes from a small trial at the University of Birmingham. Twelve older men took 1 g of NR daily for 21 days, and their muscle NAD+ metabolome rose. The trial also reported anti-inflammatory signatures in the aged participants' muscle.
This is early, small-scale research, and it looked at muscle rather than immunity. It does suggest that supporting NAD+ metabolism is a sensible area to explore, and researchers are continuing to study it.
Resilience is built daily
The most credible longevity advice hasn't changed: good sleep, regular movement, varied nutrition and stress management do the heavy lifting. Supplements work best as part of that routine, not in place of it.
That's the thinking behind Marathon, Not A Sprint, our cellular support formula.
It combines an NAD+ precursor (NR), Lion's Mane and antioxidants in a liquid, taken as a daily ritual. It reflects a simple belief: the body's long-term resilience is built by consistency, not quick fixes.
