Why We Trusted the Drop Before the Pill
Long before anyone swallowed a tablet, they swallowed a spoonful.
For most of human history, medicine was measured drop by drop by a person you trusted. The pill, for all its convenience, is a surprisingly recent invention. The drop came first for a reason.
A liquid inheritance, thousands of years deep
The habit of steeping plants in liquid to draw out their goodness is almost as old as civilisation itself. Ancient Egyptians were soaking herbs in alcohol to make tinctures and cordials as far back as roughly 3000 BCE, and evidence of similar practices shows up independently in early China, Turkey, and the eastern Mediterranean not long after distillation itself was discovered.
By the time the Persian physician Avicenna compiled his Canon of Medicine in 1025 CE, tinctures were already a well-established part of the medical toolkit. When alcohol distillation spread into Europe in the 12th century, it was largely alchemists chasing "elixirs" - a word that itself came to mean a liquid remedy - who drove the technique forward.
The apothecary's counter: medicine made to be trusted
Walk into a medieval or Renaissance apothecary and you wouldn't be handed a sealed packet. You'd watch your remedy being made. Apothecaries measured, blended, and mixed herbal tinctures and elixirs by hand, in front of the person who needed them, part chemist, part confidant, part quality inspector. That visible act of preparation was, in itself, a form of trust: you could see what went into what you were about to take.
By the 17th to 19th centuries, elixirs had become genuinely central to European medicine. Formal pharmacopoeias catalogued dozens of them, and the 1859 publication of a sweetened "Elixir of Calisaya" by Philadelphia pharmacist Alfred B. Taylor kicked off what pharmacists at the time literally called an "elixir mania" through the 1870s. The founding of the American Pharmaceutical Association in 1852 further professionalised the craft, turning the corner drugstore into a genuinely trusted health institution, one built almost entirely around liquid preparation.
Why the pill took over - and it wasn't about efficacy
The shift away from the drop didn't happen because liquids stopped working. It happened because of a machine.
In 1843, the British artist and inventor William Brockedon patented a device for "shaping pills, lozenges and black lead by pressure in dies" - essentially the first practical tablet press. Brockedon wasn't a pharmacist; he built the mechanism to compress graphite for pencil leads, and a pharmaceutical firm later noticed it could just as easily compress medicine.
Brockedon's press changed the economics of medicine overnight. Tablets could be mass-produced, standardised, stacked, shipped, and stored for years without spoiling. It wasn't a leap forward for the body but a leap forward for the factory. The pharmaceutical industry that grew up around the tablet press was optimised for shelf life, manufacturing speed, and distribution, not necessarily for how efficiently the body could actually use what was inside.
What may have been traded away along the way
A pill has to survive being swallowed intact, travel through stomach acid, and physically break apart before anything inside it can even begin to be absorbed. That disintegration step doesn't exist for a liquid, the nutrients are already in solution, ready for the small intestine to get to work.
Head-to-head pharmacokinetic studies on specific compounds have shown real, measurable differences: a 2024 crossover study on a water-soluble curcumin formulation found significantly higher blood plasma levels compared with a conventional curcumin tablet, and earlier pilot research comparing liquid and solid vitamin B12 preparations found faster absorption in the liquid form.
This means the drop was never the primitive version of the pill. It was, for most of history, simply the version, refined over millennia by people who could see, taste, and adjust exactly what they were making.
Why we're going back to the drop
At Inora, we're reviving liquid formulas because of the fundamentals that made the drop trustworthy in the first place- visible quality, precise and adjustable dosing, and a formulation the body doesn't have to fight to break down are still the fundamentals that matter. We've paired them with modern manufacturing standards the 19th-century apothecary never had: verified potency, consistent batches, and rigorous testing, without the mass-production trade-offs the tablet press was built to solve for.
The pill won the last 180 years on convenience and shelf life. We think it's worth asking, drop by drop, what else was worth keeping.
